Field note 01 / Refill systems
A refill system is designed at the second purchase
The permanent case gets the photograph. Compatibility, replenishment, and the empty-state experience determine whether it stays in use.
Start with the empty case
A refillable object has two beginnings: opening the starter kit, then running out. The first is easy to stage. The second happens in a bathroom, before work, with an empty container. A useful critique starts there. Can someone identify the refill without remembering a brand-specific name? Can they see how it releases? Does the case make sense while it is waiting to be filled?
The interface is the product
The catalog groups Fussy and Wild deodorant cases with Kjaer Weis makeup compacts under the same refill lens. That does not mean their refills are interchangeable. It means each separates a durable holder from a consumable part. Look at the join: tabs, magnets, threads, or friction. A beautiful exterior cannot resolve an ambiguous interface. A diagram of the refill path can reveal more than another image of the closed case.
Audit the next order
Write a short scenario: “I have this case, it is empty, and I need its replacement.” Then walk from the case to the brand’s current product page. Record what identifies compatibility, whether a starter kit is easy to confuse with a refill, and how many decisions the shopper must make. Do not infer compatibility from similar photographs. A refill that only works with one generation needs that boundary stated where the purchase happens.
What this cannot establish
A refill mechanism alone does not establish lower lifetime impact. That requires evidence about materials, transport, packaging, and actual reuse. This is an interface critique, not a lifecycle calculation. The design question is narrower and testable: does the system make the second purchase more legible than the first?
